Professional triathlete Jesse Thomas, of Bend, crushed the competition on his way to winning his second Pole Pedal Paddle elite men’s title on Saturday.
Thomas passed Marshall Greene, also of Bend, on the running stage of the popular multisport race in Central Oregon to win with a time of 1 hour, 43 minutes. Greene, the defending champion and a seven-time PPP winner, finished second in 1:46:37. Andrew Boone, also of Bend, was third in 1:47:17.
Bend’s Zoë Roy won the elite women’s race for the third straight year in 2:03:17. Mary Wellington, of Bend, finished second in 2:14:13, and Carolyn Daubeny, also of Bend, was third in 2:18:10.
The 42nd annual PPP included an alpine ski stage at Mt. Bachelor ski area, a 6.2-kilometer nordic ski, a 22-mile bike ride into Bend, a 5-mile run, a 1½-mile paddle, and a half-mile sprint to the finish at Bend’s Les Schwab Amphitheater.
