When it comes to recruiting, preps take backseat to AAU

Pac-12 expands conference season

As it turns out, an abbreviated 2020-21 basketball season still means more Pac-12 games for both the men and women.

The conference announced Thursday evening the men will continue with its inaugural 20-game Pac-12 schedule and the women were approved to play a 22-game conference schedule. Traditionally both played 18 conference games.

The Pac-12 is still putting together the schedule for all teams and won’t release it until it’s complete.

However, the defending Pac-12 champion Oregon men will have games against UCLA and Washington “before Christmas,” Ducks men’s coach Dana Altman said.

The 20-game conference schedule leaves room for seven nonconference games and there have been reports that the season will start with a game on Nov. 25 against Eastern Washington.

“We’re scrambling,” Altman said. “I feel hesitant to give dates and opponents because we have not received contracts back. With all the questions surrounding testing, bringing nonconference opponents in and their testing protocols matching up with our testing protocols, the wording in those contracts has to be specific.”
