Oregon QB Anthony Brown Jr.: ‘Everything’s good’ between him and Ducks receivers

EUGENE — The outward displays of frustration from Oregon receiver Devon Williams and quarterback Anthony Brown Jr. during last week’s loss at Utah were not indicative of a larger issue between the duo, according to the super senior signal caller.
On multiple occasions, Williams gestured about ball placement from Brown. And even the stoic quarterback appeared frustrated with his leading receiver after a late drop in the end zone in the 38-7 loss for the Ducks, who were eliminated from College Football Playoff contention in the process.
Brown said “everything’s good” between him and Williams, who is one of the players he lives with.
“We’re very passionate and just as frustrated as we are, we can’t show our emotions on the field,” Brown said. “I would say there was no beef between anybody. Just our frustration about how the game went and what was going on at the time kind of showed. I wouldn’t take it any bigger than what it is, or what it was or what people think it is.”
After Oregon’s final offensive series ended with a turnover on downs and the players went to the sideline, ABC television cameras caught Williams gesturing down the sideline, prompting play-by-play announcer Sean McDonough to say, “I think the coach (receiver coach Bryan McClendon) told Williams to stay away from Brown.” Earlier in the game, analyst Todd Blackledge pointed out Williams’ gesturing about ball placement after an incompletion, saying the receiver was “showing up” the quarterback.
Asked how he’d prefer receivers to communicate about ball placement, Brown said, “We could talk, we’ll talk — and that we did on the sideline. Whatever they said on the telecast, I wouldn’t really worry about it and that’s how we know each other. So it is what it is.”
Oregon coach Mario Cristobal felt there wasn’t “a narrative here to be created” about the interaction between the two.
“I think the players tried their best to play hard,” Cristobal said. “Did not see any issues between any receiver and our quarterback, especially receivers that were thrown in the fire after having a couple of late (injuries) — one the previous week (Johnny Johnson III) had an injury on game day and one (Jaylon Redd) happened during the course of the week. I did not see or sense any type of drama … or to what you are referring to. If there is, it will certainly be handled.”
Williams, who has not spoken publicly all season despite multiple media requests, has 28 catches for 430 yards and three touchdowns.
