The unintentional use of an ineligible pitcher has cost Bend High a Mountain Valley Conference baseball victory and dropped the Lava Bears a spot in the league standings.
Bend’s 7-2 win over Mountain View on Tuesday had the Lava Bears tied with Sprague for second place in the MVC. But the decision became a forfeit after Bend coach Quinn Clair was made aware following the game that he had used an ineligible pitcher and the team, according to Clair, promptly self-reported the violation to the Oregon School Activities Association.
Clair said Wednesday that he discovered too late that the ineligible pitcher had thrown two too many pitches in his previous outing to be eligible to pitch again Tuesday.
With the forfeit, Bend slipped to third in the final MVC standings at 7-5, one game behind second-place Sprague and three behind champion South Salem. The Lava Bears, 17-7 overall, held the No. 10 position in the OSAA rankings as of Wednesday night.
Mountain View finishes the season 2-10 and last in the MVC, 7-15 overall.
The Class 6A baseball rankings freeze at 10 p.m. on Thursday, after which the pairings will be set for Monday’s first round of the 32-team state playoffs.
