Registration open for BPRD leagues — Registration is now open for Bend Park & Recreation District youth and adult basketball programs. The first program of the fall and winter seasons is boys middle school basketball, which runs from Nov. 1 through Dec. 20. Registration closes Sunday, and boys should sign up for their school’s team at The corresponding girls league begins in January, and registration closes Dec. 15. Both programs cost $58. Registration for Bitty Ball (kindergarten through second grade) will continue through Oct. 13 or until the program is full. Sign ups for youth basketball, for kids in third through fifth grade, will close Nov. 6. The high school basketball league for boys who do not play for a school team will continue accepting registrations through Nov. 26. Men’s and women’s adult leagues will run from Nov. 5 to March 11, and team registration closes Oct. 16.


Bend farrier wins in California — Bend’s Kurt Fisk won the Edward Martin Horseshoeing special award at the 31st Annual Draft Horse Classic, held Sept. 21-24 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, California.


Monster Dash to be held Oct. 29 — The Monster Dash 5K will begin at the Athletic Club of Bend at 9 a.m. Oct. 29. A kids’ mile run will follow. Costumes are encouraged. Entry costs $25 for the 5K ($30 after Oct. 25) while registration for the mile is free. Online registration is available at cork-events/monsterdash/.

Bend Thanksgiving events merge — The annual Bend Thanksgiving Classic and I Like Pie runs will merge into one event held in Bend’s Old Mill District on Nov. 23. The joint event will continue to support both Girls on the Run, the previous beneficiary of the Boys & Girls Club of Bend’s Thanksgiving Classic, and NeighborImpact, the I Like Pie beneficiary. Participants in the new “I Like Pie” may choose to enter the timed or untimed 5K or 10K or an untimed 1-mile family run. The early registration fee for individuals varies from $10 to $25 depending on the event entered, and families of four can enter the untimed 5K or 1-mile for $25. Prices increase Oct. 16. Freeze Your Fanny announced for Dec. 30 — The annual Freeze Your Fanny run and swim duathlon will be held Dec. 30 at the Madras Aquatic Center. Participants can enter the 8-mile run, 5K run/walk, or 5K run and 500 yard swim. Day-of registration will start at 9 a.m. Proceeds benefit the Madras MountainStar Relief Nursery.
