Area swordsman wins junior nations — Bend’s Tristan Krueger is a national champion, having won the Cadet Men’s Epee at the 2014 Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in Portland on Feb. 16. Krueger, who competes with the High Desert Fencing Club, won 15-14 in the championship final of his 256-man bracket.

C.O. club wins team event — The High Desert Fencing Club won the mixed team epee event Feb.. 22 at the Winter Epee Extravaganza in Salem. Bend athletes Jacob Brown, Michael Coffman and Xunan Smith represented HDFC in the competition. The HDFC’s Y12 team placed third in the mixed epee category at the same competition. That squad was made up of Olivia Barnes and Michele Bodon.

Nordic skiing

MBSEF sends nine to Junior Nationals — The Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation is sending nine nordic skiers to the 2014 Junior National Nordic Ski Championships in Stowe, Vt., which started Saturday and runs through March 8. Sierra Foster, Emily Hyde, Emma Malmquist, Skyler Kenna, Leo Lukens, Max Millslagle, Zeb Millslagle, Casey Shannon, and Alec Wiltz are all expected to ski in Vermont this week.

Bend skiers finish Birkie — A pair of Bend skiers posted top-25 finishes at the 2014 American Birkebeiner in Hayward, Wis., on Feb. 22. Bend’s Sarah Max took 10th in the women’s 50K skate race and Matthew Briggs placed 25th in the men’s 50K skate.

Local qualifies for nationals — Tanner Lujan, a skier for the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation, is currently competing at the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Under 18 Nationals at Copper Mountain, Colo., which started Friday and runs through March 6.

Nine MBSEF skiers headed to U16 regionals — Nine alpine skiers from the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation have been selected to compete in the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Western Region Under 16 Championships, March 18-23. Carina Bracy, Erin Smith, Ashley Lodmell, Sophia Sahm, Minam Cravens, Charlie Stuermer, Walter Lafky, and Ian Lafky will all ski at the regional meet in Jackson Hole, Wyo.


Redmond rink closes for winter — The Redmond Ice Skating Rink has closes for the season due to warm weather conditions, the Redmond Area Park and Recreation District announced Thursday. The rink will re-open in November.
