Coming off the worst league season in franchise history, the Bend Elks finished with a season’s best.
A 7-5 nonleague win over the Hayesville Hammers in the 2018 season finale Tuesday night was the Elks’ fourth straight victory — their longest winning streak of the summer.
In front of 2,166 fans at Vince Genna Stadium, Bend starter Ryan Mets battled through a rocky outing to earn his first win of the season. Offensively, the Elks got key contributions from three local products: Heath Pickhardt, from Prineville, was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI; Troy Viola, from Bend, had a double, a run scored and an RBI; and Collin Runge, from Redmond, had a hit and scored two runs.
The Elks’ previous long winning streak this season was three games, a home sweep of the Walla Walla Sweets to open the second half of the West Coast League schedule.
Bend finished its WCL slate last week with a 12-42 record for both halves combined. That winning percentage — .222 — was lower than the 13-23 (.361) Elks of 2005, the team’s sixth season and its first year in the WCL.
