GRESHAM — George Mendazona hit a home run for the second straight game, Bryce Rogan hit a grand slam, and the Bend Elks beat the Gresham GreyWolves 13-8 on Sunday evening for their fourth straight win.
The Elks did not get any needed help in their playoff chase, as Cowlitz won to move into a tie with idle Corvallis for the second-half lead. The Elks (13-10 second half, 25-25 overall) trail by one game and have played three more games than either team. The Elks finish their season with a three-game home series against Cowlitz beginning Friday.
After A.J. Atherton (1-0) allowed a two-run home run in the first inning, the Elks countered when Joe Casey doubled in two runs and scored on Mendazona’s homer. The Ridgeview High product and Oregon State player is on an eight-game hitting streak, going 14-for-36 (.389) over that span with 11 RBIs.
In the seventh inning, with the Elks leading 8-5, Mendazona was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and scored on Rogan’s grand slam. It was Rogan’s third home run of the season and first since July 7.
Zach Clayton went 4-for-6, Chris Troye had three hits and two RBIs and Tyler Lampkin also had three of the Elks’ 17 hits.
The Elks finish their three-game series with the GreyWolves (9-14, 19-31) on Monday night.
