A 10-year-old Bend girl has been named the USA Track & Field Oregon Association female track athlete of the year in her age group.

Lauren Willard, who runs for the Central Oregon Running Klub (CORK), was recognized last month during the Oregon Association’s annual meeting, held at Canby High School.

Throughout last track and field season, Willard, now a fifth-grader at Highland Elementary School, posted several top placings in 800- and 1,500-meter events in the U12 age group across the Northwest and California.

Willard finished ninth in the 1,500 meters with a personal best of 5 minutes, 6.2 seconds at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships in Sacramento, California, in July. Also at that meet, she placed 11th in the 800 in 2:29.37. Her personal best in the 800 is 2:28.94, which she posted in the USATF Region 13 Championship in Tacoma, Washington.
