Defending champion Murrayhill kept its chance at a repeat alive Wednesday while putting an end to the title hopes of Bend North.
Murrayhill of Beaverton defeated Bend North 6-2 to advance out of the losers bracket in the Oregon Little League Majors (ages 10-12) baseball state tournament at Sky View Middle School in Bend.
The tournament hosts, bumped into the losers bracket with a second-round loss to Sprague of Salem on Sunday, had beaten both Pendleton and Hollywood-Rose City of Portland to come within one win of the championship round in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament.
Instead, once-beaten Murrayhill, the 2018 state champ, will play for the championship against undefeated Sprague. Those two teams will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, and if Murrayhill wins, there will be a rematch at 5 p.m. for the title. If Sprague wins the 2 p.m. game, it will represent Oregon in the Northwest Region championships next month in San Bernardino, California.
In the Oregon Little League Juniors (ages 12-14) state tournament, also staged at Sky View Middle School, La Grande knocked off Murrayhill twice Wednesday to capture the title. La Grande, whose 12-8 win over Bend North on Monday bounced the host squad from the five-team, double-elimination tourney, advanced through the losers bracket and topped previously unbeaten Murrayhill 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon. That forced a second game for the championship, and La Grande won that one 14-7.
As the Oregon Juniors champion, La Grande qualifies for the West Region championships July 26-Aug. 3 in San Jose, California.
