It was not a good day for the tournament hosts.
Bend North teams lost games in both the Majors and Juniors divisions Sunday in Oregon Little League baseball state tournaments being staged at Bend’s Sky View Middle School.
The Bend North Majors (ages 10-12), who won 4-2 over Del Norte of Crescent City, California, on Saturday’s opening day of play, dropped into the losers bracket with a 5-3 loss to Sprague of Salem. Bend North never led in what coach Todd Sheets described as a defensive matchup.
Playing as the visiting team, Bend North had runners on second and third base when the final out was recorded, sending the locals to a loser-out game against Pendleton at 8 a.m. Monday. Pendleton beat Clackamas 6-1 in an elimination game Sunday. Sprague advanced in the winners bracket and will play at 11 a.m. Tuesday against Murrayhill of Beaverton, which beat Hollywood-Rose City of Portland 10-5 in a second-round game earlier Sunday.
Hollywood-Rose City plays an elimination game at 11 a.m. Monday against Medford American, which stayed alive in the losers bracket with a 5-2 win over Del Norte on Sunday.
The eight-team, double-elimination Majors tournament runs through Thursday’s championship round.
Coming off a first-round bye, the Bend North Juniors (ages 12-14) fell 14-3 to Del Norte on Sunday. Bend North led 3-1 after two innings, but Del Norte took the lead with a four-run third inning, then broke it open with a nine-run fifth fueled in part by four walks and three Bend North errors.
Starting pitcher Ashton Oliver worked a strong 21⁄3 innings for Bend North, striking out five and allowing one hit and one earned run. Oliver also had two of his team’s three hits and drove in a run. Logan Ring had a hit and an RBI for Bend North, and Brenden Plumb drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning to account for Bend’s third run.
The Bend North Juniors, who finished with nine errors against Del Norte in a run-rule game shortened to five innings, face a loser-out game at 5 p.m. Monday against La Grande, which eliminated Cascade/West Salem 11-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Del Norte advances to play at 2 p.m. Monday against Murrayhill, which beat Cascade/West Salem in a first-round game Saturday.
The five-team, double-elimination Juniors tournament runs through the championship round Wednesday.
