Bend at Wenatchee

When: 6:35 p.m. Wednesday

WENATCHEE, Wash. — Gil Luna struck out 12 batters over seven innings, Nick Burgarello had three of Bend’s 12 hits, and the Elks throttled Wenatchee 9-1 on Wednesday night to improve to 2-0 in the second half of the West Coast League season.

Bend, now 14-15 overall in WCL play, led 2-0 before breaking the game open in the fifth inning with four runs. The rally featured RBI singles by Dante DeNiro and Burgarello and was capped by Jack Johnson’s sacrifice fly. Seven different Elks were part of the hitting attack, including Bend High graduate Justin Parsons, who belted his third home run of the season to lead off the ninth inning.

Luna, a left-hander from Casa Grande, Arizona, and the University of Arizona, allowed three hits, walked four, hit a batter and threw three wild pitches while running his team-leading strikeout total to 45. He gave up the lone AppleSox run, an unearned run in the sixth inning, and improved his record to 2-1 for the season.

The two teams conclude their three-game series — the sixth straight game between the Elks and AppleSox — on Thursday night. The Elks are back home Friday to open a three-game set against the Victoria HarbourCats.
