Four Central Oregon teams are in position to bring home trophies after Friday’s first day of the OSAA state wrestling championships.

Crook County, which will have six wrestlers in the championship semifinals Saturday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, leads Dallas 92-86.5 at the top of the Class 5A standings.

Hunter Mode, a 4A state champion last season for Crook County, is in the semifinals at 126 pounds. Cowboys Tucker Bonner (106), Steven Ware (113), Zachary Mauras (132), Kyle Knudtson (182) and Caleb Parrott (285) are all also in state title contention.

Culver, which leads Vernonia 31-23 for first place in 2A/1A heading into Saturday, also has six wrestlers in the semifinals.

Lorenzo Vasquez, a three-time state champion, advanced at 126 pounds along with Bulldogs teammates Anthony Hood (132), Lane Downing (138), Hunter Augustynovich (145), Isaiah Toomey (152) and Cylus Hoke (195).

With five wrestlers in the championship semifinals and five more still alive in the consolation bracket, La Pine is only seven points behind Nyssa for first place in 3A and one point ahead of third-place Burns.

The Hawks’ Derrik Kerr, a two-time state champion, is in the 132-pound semifinals.

Also for La Pine, Jose Orozco upset Nyssa’s Raul Ruiz, the No. 2 seed, 9-8 in the quarterfinals Friday to remain in contention for the 120-pound state championship. “That was a big win for us,” La Pine coach Aaron Flack said. “He had a pretty commanding lead over him and got caught on his back and barely pulled it out. It was a good, close match.”

La Pine’s Trentyn Tennant (170) and Dylan Mann (113) both avenged losses suffered earlier this season with wins in the quarterfinals to stay in the state title hunt.

Daniel Underwood (220) will also join his Hawks teammates in the semifinals.

“Those are two big rounds for us,” said Flack of Saturday morning’s consolation and semifinals. “We’ve got to have a lot of kids step up.”

Mountain View is fourth in 6A after getting four wrestlers to the championship semifinals. The Cougars’ Beau Ohlson, a two-time 5A state champion, recorded three pins to reach the semifinals.

“He’s wrestling so well,” Mountain View coach Les Combs said of Ohlson. “He’s right on his game. He’s running on all cylinders right now.”

The Cougars’ Carson Fassett defeated Roseburg’s Colin Rietmann 7-6 to advance to the semifinals.

“It was tenuous match against a tough Roseburg kid,” Combs said. “Carson did a really good job. He got down early and then took the lead. It went back and forth and he wrestled a solid match. He wrestled to his capabilities. That was a big win for him. You want to get over that hump of getting in a position to place.”

Colton Burkhardt will get a rematch with Roseburg’s Logan Folsom in the 170-pound semifinals. Folsom has won two close matches over Burkhardt this season, including 1-0 in triple overtime last month at the Oregon Classic.

Mountain View’s Tyson Oliver also reached the 6A semifinals at 113 pounds.

“Even the kids that aren’t placing, almost all of our kids are scoring points for us, which is a big reason why we’re in the position we’re in,” Combs said. “That’s some good quality depth to our team. We had a quality effort by every kid here. We all wanted to make sure we were in the hunt for a trophy and every kid fought for every point. All the kids did great.”

The Cougars are 15 points ahead of fifth-place West Linn and 17.5 points behind third-place Sprague.

“We’re going to have to fight to keep our spot,” Combs said. “If we wrestle to our ability we’re going to have a good shot at being in the top four.”

Redmond is sitting sixth in 5A. The Panthers have four wrestlers in the semifinals: Kaden Lawrence (113), Junior Downing (138), Clayton Elrod (160) and Austin Carter (170).

In 6A, Bend’s Nathan Denney upset Century’s Loudyn Reese, the No. 3 seed at 195 pounds, to advance to Saturday’s semifinals, which begin at 9:45 a.m. Finals are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Competition in the girls division will also begin Saturday morning.
