Long summer days are giving way to less daylight and the start of that desire to hunker down. Since the bedroom is the place we spend a minimum of one-third of our lives it should be inviting and decluttered of bills, business and the stuff of life. It should be a place of refuge.
Creating that refuge can be fun and enlightening. The fun starts with choosing colors and textures that evoke relaxation and calm to you. Blue, lavender, grey, caramel, white — it’s your space. It should be a place to which you want to escape.
The bed is the focal point. Find bedding that makes you want to climb in and snuggle. Make sure it suits you and your lifestyle. Simple, solid colored, high thread count sheets beat busy patterns for a serene feel. Add accent and flair in the bedspread or duvet cover. Throw pillows are beautiful, but can be cumbersome for those who want bed-making to be a simple task. You can still be elegant with just a couple of accent pillows.
An inviting place to sit and read is always helpful in a bedroom, especially for those who experience occasional insomnia. Good lighting and a comfortable chair with a small table nearby are essential.
Window coverings are your next consideration. If you are someone who can’t sleep with the tiniest bit of light, then room darkening shades with drapes over the top would be a good idea for you. If light doesn’t bother you, stick to something beautiful like a Silhouette shade from Hunter Douglas. It will give you both a diffused, soft light and privacy.
The bedroom is one of the hardest working and most overlooked areas in our homes. There are rewards in taking time and effort to make yours as welcoming as you possibly can.
