The wanton killing by a pack of brigands of 4000 sheep whose offence was that they lived and occupied a part of the open range which somebody else wanted, stamps the community with a character that will be hard to live down. The most open disregard of personal and property rights goes without an attempt of punishment. All the strife between sheep men and cattle men is over something that belongs to neither. And, not infrequently, happens in other walks of life also, the bitterest animosities spring from undemonstrable theories regarding our rights and those of our neighbors.
