One day, almost everybody may agree that cars are unsustainable axles of evil. Bend is not there.

And so it seems odd that the Bend Development Code would declare that “auto-dependent” or “auto-related” land uses are not permitted for new entities on some parts of Third Street.

Yes, we are talking about that Third Street — one of the main auto routes through town.

But what is refreshing is that the Bend Planning Commission is scheduled to consider Monday a reasonable compromise for one auto-related entity that would like to move to Third Street — Les Schwab Tire Centers.

The tire center on Franklin Avenue would like to relocate to a spot on Third Street near NE Burnside Avenue. That move is forbidden under the city’s current code — even with a special permit.

The Third Street location is already home to Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Hardy’s Burgers & Ice Cream, Sangie Hair Spa, Bend Truck Toyz, Vintage Moon Antiques, Cascades Telecommunications, a single-family residence and an abandoned building, the city says. Many of those entities are obviously already auto related or dependent.

The proposal the planning commission is set to consider has two parts. First, the property the tire center wants to move to would be allowed to have auto-dependent uses. That’s great! Second, the property the tire center is moving from on Franklin would be prohibited from auto-dependent uses. That may be a necessary sacrifice to get city approval.
