Sharon Mattes, 48: A woman who, under the name Sharon Bottoms, was at the center of a much-publicized custody case in Virginia in the 1990s in which her mother argued that Mattes and her female partner were not suitable parents. Died Jan. 21 in Richlands, North Carolina.

Raymond Price Jr., 88: A speechwriter and confidant of Richard Nixon who crafted some of the most consequential addresses of Nixon’s presidency, including his fina public remarks as commander in chief when he announced his resignation in the wake of the Watergate scandal. Died Feb. 13.
