Thomas (Tom) James Bartley Shanley III passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, after a defiant battle with prostate cancer. He was 67 years old.

Born in Princeton, New Jersey, he lived in Japan, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Southern California as an adolescent with his military family. He moved to Bend in 1977 and started a family in 1978.

Tom was a skilled outdoorsman, diehard baseball fan, and enthusiastic ping pong player. He enjoyed hiking local trails with his faithful canine companion, Betty; listening to live music; and spending time with his granddaughters Star, Avia, and Violet.

He is survived by daughters, Lina Shanley (Ryan Johanson) of Eugene, Kate Shanley of Bend, and Claire Shanley of Alexandria, Virginia. He is also survived by sister, Anne Howard (Ron) of Atlanta, Georgia; brother, Roger Shanley of Tucson, Arizona; and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Colonel Thomas JB Shanley, Jr.; and mother, Agnes C. Shanley.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Bend at a later date. In lieu of memorial contributions, spend a day outside with your family in Tom's memory or pay it forward with an intentional act of kindness, just as Tom would have done.
