A hiker died Saturday after slipping and falling about 100 feet off a trail at Smith Rock State Rock, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim was an Oregon man in his mid-30s who lived outside of Deschutes County, said sheriff’s Sgt. James McLaughlin. The hiker’s name is being withheld until family members can be notified, McLaughlin said.

A companion of the hiker called 911 about 9:40 a.m. to report the fall near the access to Lower Gorge.

Sheriff’s search and rescue personnel were still investigating what happened late Saturday afternoon McLaughlin said.
