Incumbent Ray Miao appeared to be fending off Ben Schimmoller’s upstart challenge for a seat on the board of Deschutes Rural Fire Protection District No. 2.
In early returns in Tuesday’s special district election, Miao had 66% of the vote compared to Schimmoller’s 33%.
Last year, Schimmoller, 26, lost a Republican primary to represent Deschutes County in the Oregon Legislature by only two votes.
He now works as a legislative aide for Sen. Tim Knopp, R-Bend, and has said his youth and statewide connections would have benefited the fire district board.
Miao, 75, is a retired biochemist and cancer researcher who’s served on the board since the 1990s.
He’s also a long-time member of the board of the Deschutes County Library.
He also won reelection to that position on Tuesday.
