The summer travel season to popular lakes including Paulina and Elk begins Friday with the opening of the Cascade Lakes Highway and Paulina Lake Road.

The Deschutes County Road Department will open both roads by 6 a.m., according to the county website. Significant roadside snow at higher elevations may limit parking and access.

“There is still a lot of roadside snow and not a lot of room to park, avoid parking roadside and don’t become a roadside hazard yourself,” Chris Doty, director of the Deschutes County Road Department, said Monday.

Resorts in the region are independently owned and may not be open yet, warned Doty. “Call before you go, they may still be digging out the snow,” he said.

Doty added that the road department beat its annual target of a Memorial Day opening by one week. The roads are expected to close again just before Thanksgiving.
