A Bend man who was struck by a vehicle while working under the hood of his truck on the side of U.S. Highway 20 died early Wednesday morning, according to Oregon State Police.
Around 4:30 a.m., Nicholas Fagen, 77, was driving westbound on Highway 20 about 40 miles west of Burns when his vehicle became disabled. His truck, with a 40-foot gooseneck trailer attached, eventually came to a stop and partially blocked the westbound lane.
While Fagen was working on his truck on the side of the road, Lloyd Theen, 69, of Winlock, Washington, hit the trailer while driving westbound, forcing the vehicle and trailer off the roadway and into the shoulder, state police said.
Fagen suffered fatal injuries at the scene. His passenger, Danny Reinhart, a 61-year-old Bend resident, sustained minor injuries.
Theen, 69, was not injured.
The westbound lane was closed for several hours, state police said, to conduct an investigation into the crash and to clean up about 125 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled onto the roadway.
