Bulletin Staff Report

A homeless man was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after firing a handgun while leaving the Mountain’s Edge bar on S. U.S. Highway 97 in Bend.

At about 2 a.m., the Bend police department was notified that a man had fired a gun while leaving the bar and was last seen walking toward Goodwill with the weapon in his hand. Within minutes, according to a police department press release, officers spotted the man walking into the north entrance of Walmart and detained him.

The man, identified as 52-year-old transient John Lloyd Smith, was in possession of a .38-caliber semiautomatic handgun. The caliber matched that of the spent casing located at Mountain’s Edge.

No one was injured during the shooting, according to the police department press release, and it is not known why Smith allegedly fired the gun. However, drugs and alcohol are believed to have played a role.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and unlawful use of a weapon.
