Mount Hood

Clackamas County Search & Rescue led a multi-agency response to pull a fallen climber off of Mount Hood on Saturday.

Rescue teams pulled a climber identified as Von Donald Houvener off of Mt. Hood Saturday after he fell about 300 feet.

Houvener, 26, of Portland was injured but conscious and alert when reached by rescuers, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s office said.

Houvener tumbled into the White River Canyon and was located at about 9,100 feet in elevation. His climbing partner, Katie Howard of Portland, called 911 to summon help.

Clackamas County Search & Rescue led the effort, and received assistance from other agencies. Rescuers used a hoist to lift Houvener to an Army National Guard helicopter for transport to an area hospital.

“It was fairly straight forward to reach him,” said Sgt. Marcus Mendoza of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office. “They did attempt to land the helicopter onsite there, but the ground was too soft.”
