Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer serves as President Pro Tempore of the House

In a sign of her importance to the GOP, Lori Chavez-DeRemer served briefly as President Pro Tempore for the House, the name for the member who steps in to run the House when the Speaker is off the floor.

U.S. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, R-Happy Valley, is breaking ranks with many Republicans in the U.S. Congress to co-sponsor federal cannabis law reforms with the leader of House Democrats and one of the far-right’s top ideological enemies in Congress.

She’s joining with Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., on legislation to create a regulatory framework that would be in place if federal marijuana prohibitions are ever lifted. A second bill is co-sponsored with U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known as “AOC” and the top figure in the liberal “squad” regularly denounced by congressional conservatives. The bill would provide $20 million in funding for reviewing and expunging past convictions under state marijuana laws.

No comment on the joint SAFE act introduction? Must have missed the deadline. It has the highest chance of passing, imo and pun intended.

She voted for the Republican Debt Reduction bill which would gut the environmental legislation and increase oil and coal production and thus large increases in emissions and yet she try's to claim she is for protecting the environment when she really doesn't care. She is a two timer that is trying to fake her way

I can clearly envision the DeRemer staff meeting wherein the discussion was about what issue could DeRemer cross the aisle with very little consequence (cannabis, it turns out) and project the image of a reasonable moderate (in order to win an election). But the really important issues like debt ceiling, women’s rights, first Amendment rights, protecting the US safety net of SS/Medicare, spending on infrastructure and repatriating chip fabrication… she’s totally aligned with the Party extremists.

Ask her why she would support reducing funding for the IRS budget when the payback for keeping that agency fully staffed is in the billions. THAT, my friends, is blind partisanship. She’s shown her colors. At least, so far, she’s better than Cliff Bentz who has galloped away from his reasonable moderation while an OR state legislator.

We desperately need a third party.
