Bend Area Habitat for Humanity and the Redmond Habitat for Humanity will merge with a goal of doubling the number of homes they currently build, the two nonprofit organizations announced Tuesday.

Scott Rohrer, executive director of the Bend organization, said the merger would expand the reach of both programs. A lack of affordable housing is a major problem in the whole area, not just in Bend, he said.

Projects in Redmond will benefit from a greater access to affordable housing funds, according to Redmond-area director Scott Brown.

Since 1989, Habitat for Humanity in both cities has built 142 homes and repaired another 145, completing a handful of homes each year.
