Bulletin staff report

A Bend woman has been arrested and charged with stealing thousands of dollars from a Bend painting business over a period of several years.

Gretchen Miller, 33, is a former bookkeeper for Bend Painting, on Boyd Acres Road, according to a news release from the Bend Police Department. The business reported a theft to Bend police Dec. 8, indicating that managers believed a former employee had taken thousands of dollars over a four-year span.

Bend Painting had hired a new office manager and asked the person to look for discrepancies in financial records over the period during which Miller was employed. The investigation found that more than $189,000 had been taken in various ways, according to the news release.

Police suspect Miller of hiding numerous transfers to personal and credit card accounts.

Bend police detectives searched Miller’s home in southeast Bend on Thursday and took her to the Deschutes County jail on multiple counts of aggravated theft.

According to court records related to this case, Gretchen Marie Miller is accused of stealing from Bend Painting between Jan. 1, 2012, and Oct. 15.

Miller is also known as Gretchen Marie Lupton, according to court records, and the news release initially issued by Bend police on Friday refers to her as Gretchen Boni Miller.

Among the staff members listed on the Bend Painting website is a Gretchen Lupton-Boni, described as director of operations, who joined the company in 2012. According the site, Lupton-Boni earned a bachelor’s degree in business with a focus on accounting during her time with Bend Painting. She earned a master’s in accounting through Eastern Oregon University. The site says Lupton-Boni is “extremely goal oriented and wears may hats within the company.”
