Bulletin staff report

A Bend man was killed Friday afternoon while crossing Cline Falls Highway to retrieve his mail, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 5 p.m., 69-year-old Michael R. Porter crossed in front of his home in the 65400 block of Cline Falls Highway, near Connarn Road. At that time, according to a sheriff’s office press release, a witness driving southbound on Cline Falls Highway saw Porter bent over or kneeling in the middle of Cline Falls Highway, possibly collecting mail he had dropped when returning from his mailbox. The witness, who nearly hit Porter, turned around to check on him.

Lance J. Hitson, of Bend, saw a southbound vehicle flash its lights at him as he was driving north on Cline Falls Highway in his Dodge 3500 pickup truck. He then heard and felt an impact, saw Porter out of his driver’s side window and realized that he had hit him.

A passing nurse stopped at the scene to provide medical care, and a Bend Fire Department ambulance also responded. However, medics determined that Porter had died.

Hitson, 59, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, who do not believe alcohol or distracted driving contributed to the accident. Porter was wearing dark clothing at the time.
