Bulletin Staff Report

Deschutes County has a new grant program that will provide up to $40,000 for projects that reduce the risk of wildfire.

The Fuels Reduction Grant Program is expected to fund short-term fuels reduction projects to improve the county’s defensible space. The $40,000 available for the projects is supplied by proceeds from video lottery gaming.

Project preference is given to communities and neighborhoods that are working to be recognized as a Firewise USA site, or are seeking Firewise USA recognition. Firewise is a national program that connects various agencies to prepare for wildfire preparedness.

Applicants must be working at the neighborhood or community scale to reduce wildfire risk — individual property owners are not eligible. Applicants can apply online at: www.deschutes.org/grants. The deadline to apply is Dec. 13 at 5 p.m.
