A recreational vehicle caught fire Sunday morning on land owned by the City of Bend. However, the fire failed to spread through vegetation dampened by recent rain.
The Bend Fire Department responded at about 11 a.m. to smoke rising from Juniper Ridge, an area of undeveloped land on the city’s north side. The response was slowed by difficult terrain. When firefighters reached the fire, they discovered a burning motor home that appeared to have been driven into a trench and become stuck. The people operating the motor home had left, according to the fire department, and the vehicle seemed to have been stuck in the ditch for some time.
The fire scorched several nearby trees, but dampened vegetation prevented further spreading before firefighters arrived.
