Bulletin Staff Report

Three drivers and one passenger were injured in a three-vehicle accident that briefly closed U.S. Highway 97 near La Pine Tuesday afternoon. The highway reopened around 5:30 p.m.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the accident near milepost 162 around 3:45 p.m.

One car was going northbound on Highway 97 as another vehicle, facing northbound traffic, was stopped waiting to turn west across traffic. According to witness statements, the car heading northbound on the highway did not see the other vehicle, and while attempting to stop steered left into the turning car. The driver then headed into the southbound lane where it hit a third car head on.

All three drivers — Pamela Bachman, 70, William Best, 18, and Gayle Richardson, 68 — were flown to hospitals, according to Oregon State Police. One passenger, Nancy Clausen, 68, was also transported to the hospital for injuries.
