Thirteen teachers across the state of Oregon were named 2020 Oregon Regional Teachers of the Year, and two of them are Central Oregon elementary school teachers.
Manda Currier, special education teacher at Buff Elementary in Madras, and Katelyn Dover, first grade teacher at John Tuck Elementary in Redmond, were both named to the list Thursday, according to an Oregon Department of Education press release.
The two teachers will each receive a $500 award, courtesy of the Oregon Lottery, and are automatically considered for the 2020 Oregon Teacher of the Year award, which is announced in September, according to the press release. The last Central Oregon winner of the statewide award was Heather Anderson, who teaches fourth grade at Juniper Elementary in Bend, in 2016.
The regional teachers were selected through an application process, with testimonials from principals, superintendents, colleagues and students. Applicants were then assessed on their leadership skills, community involvement, instructional expertise and more. Local Education Service Districts operate this process, according to the press release.
