Medal of Honor recipient Robert Dale “Bob” Maxwell, who died Saturday in Bend, will be buried May 31 at the end of two days of public events, his family said Wednesday.
A vigil for viewing and paying respects will be held May 30 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Niswonger-Reynolds Chapel, 105 NW Irving Ave., in Bend.
A Remembrance with Honors memorial ceremony will be held May 31 at noon in the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center, 3800 SW Airport Way, in Redmond.
Interment with full military honors will immediately follow the memorial Friday. The funeral will be at Terrebonne Cemetery.
Maxwell died of natural causes. He was 98.
Maxwell was a U.S. Army soldier during World War II. During combat in France in September 1944, Maxwell’s small detachment was attacked by a much larger group of German soldiers. When a grenade was thrown in their midst, Maxwell smothered it, absorbing the blast. Though maimed, he survived and received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest honor for bravery.
After the war, Maxwell was a longtime auto repair and technology teacher at Bend High School and Central Oregon College (the forerunner of Central Oregon Community College). Maxwell also lived in Creswell and taught at Lane County Community College.
Maxwell’s four daughters released a statement Wednesday:
“Our Father was a very spiritual man and knew it was his time to go home to his Heavenly Father. Dad was such a kind, caring, man full of integrity, and love for all. He loved his God, his Country, his Family and Friends. We are very saddened and he will be missed terribly, but at the same time we are grateful that he is out of pain and is where he wanted to be, in Heaven. Thank you, Verda, Linda, Sharon Maxwell and Bonnie Spies.”
For those who wish to honor Maxwell, the family suggests a memorial contribution to Boise Bible College, Medal of Honor Scholarship, 8695 W. Marigold St., Boise, ID 83714.
