One of the surest signs that summer is near: The roof of the outdoor 50-meter pool at Juniper Swim & Fitness Center in Bend comes down.

The roof, which goes up in October, consists of 28 separate panels, each 100 feet long by just under 14 1⁄2 feet wide, and weighs somewhere between 400 and 600 pounds. Each of the panels is secured to the series of steel, riblike supports that stand above the water.

On Tuesday, lap swimming continues as parks worker Ben Lewellen, upper right, works on removing the roof.
