A half-acre brush fire Friday afternoon along the railroad tracks in southeast Bend was caused by illegal fireworks, according to the Bend Fire Department.
Fire crews responded at 2:20 p.m. to Brookhollow Drive and Honeysuckle Lane, where the brush fire was burning. Crews were able to contain the slow-moving fire.
The fire department is reminding residents that fireworks that fly more than six feet horizontally and 12 feet in the air, or shoot flaming balls or explode are illegal in Oregon.
Those who choose to use illegal fireworks risk personal injury and a substantial fine if found guilty, as well as being liable for any damage the fireworks cause and the costs of suppressing a fire caused by fireworks, according to the fire department.
