Bulletin Staff Report

Fire destroyed one house and damaged a second Wednesday afternoon in a blaze that triggered a “go now” evacuation notice of all residents in the Lazy River subdivision north of Burgess Road in La Pine.

The evacuation notice was lowered to “be ready” at 7:30 p.m., according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighters contained the blaze late in the afternoon, the sheriff’s office said.

The fire was reported at 2:31 p.m. and quickly spread through brush, burning about 11.9 acres, the sheriff’s office said. Several fire crews worked to douse the Bridge Drive Fire, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, said Sgt. William Bailey, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

“I can’t confirm what started the fire,” Bailey said. “But there was a fire that did get out of control.”

More than 20 homes were under the original evacuation notice. The homes are mostly located on Loop Drive, Walker Road, Forest Road, Faun Court, and Prairie View Drive.

A Red Cross emergency shelter was established at the La Pine Community Center for those affected by evacuations.

The fire was on private land and is not related to prescribed burns in the area, said Deschutes National Forest spokeswoman Kassidy Kern. A controlled burn did take place Wednesday west of Bend near the Cascade Lakes Welcome Station.
