An Arizona man was arrested late Thursday night after allegedly driving drunk and hitting an Oregon State Police Trooper’s vehicle, sending the trooper to the hospital.
Christopher Luna, 42, was driving north on South Highway 97 in Redmond, about to turn left into a Motel 6 on the side of the highway, according to a Redmond Police Department press release. However, while turning, Luna struck a state trooper’s vehicle, which was traveling southbound on Highway 97, the release stated.
Redmond police and fire departments were called to the scene of the crash at about 11:34 p.m. to find the two vehicles in front of the Motel 6. The state trooper was still inside his vehicle, which was resting on the driver’s side in a nearby vacant parking lot. The trooper was taken by fellow state troopers to St. Charles Redmond, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Luna was evaluated by medics at the scene, arrested and booked into the Deschutes County jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, reckless endangering and third-degree assault.
After the crash, Highway 97 was briefly closed to clean up debris from the incident.
