A pistol-wielding Lincoln County man who confronted a fellow vacationer at Seventh Mountain Resort in Bend Thursday evening was arrested following a scuffle.
Otis resident Dustin Eugene Shippee, 36, was staying in an apartment below one occupied by the family of Portland resident Michael Spencer, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. Angered by the noise coming from the Portland family’s apartment during the day, Shippee went upstairs to confront Spencer.
When what a sheriff’s office press release describes as “a brief verbal exchange” did not produce the desired result, Shippee retrieved a handgun and confronted Spencer again. A struggle ensued on a resort balcony during which Shippee’s gun fell to the ground.
Spencer’s son dialed 911 at 8:13 p.m. to report that his father was fighting an armed man. Using GPS data from the caller’s cell phone, officials determined the location of the fight, and sheriff’s deputies arrived to find Shippee retreating to his rental. He was arrested and taken to the Deschutes County jail on a number of charges, including menacing, assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
No shots were fired during the spat, according to the sheriff’s office, though Spencer sustained minor injuries.
Alcohol is believed to have played a role in the incident.
