A 19-year-old Redmond woman was killed in a head-on crash Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 97 about three miles south of Redmond.

Sara Edwards was traveling southbound at about 6:45 a.m. in a silver Honda Pilot when she lost control attempting to avoid a vehicle that was entering the highway from Desert Terrace Mobile Estates, according to Oregon State Police.

Edwards then slid into the northbound lanes and collided with a Mack concrete pumping truck, driven by Michael Cucura IV, 36, of Redmond, according to OSP.

Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene. Cucera sustained minor injuries.

The crash occurred at milepost 125 near Southwest Quarry Avenue, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

The highway was closed in the area for about four hours while the sheriff’s office and the Oregon State Police investigated the crash.

Oregon Department of Transportation reopened one lane in each direction at about 11 a.m. and all lanes on the highway were reopened shortly after 3 p.m.
