A transient was arrested Saturday evening for allegedly stealing a purse from a woman’s car in douthwest Bend and shopping with her credit cards.

Just before 7 p.m. Saturday, an unidentified person called 911 to say they’d seen a man break into a parked car and flee on foot. The Bend Police Department searched the area and found a purse belonging to the victim, 29-year-old Bend resident Annie Miller.

The police later learned that Miller’s credit cards had been used at two different stores, according to a Bend Police Department press release. Officers reviewed surveillance video captured at the stores and got a good look at 32-year-old Derek Chamberlain, who was later spotted behind the wheel of a car by an officer and pulled over.

Chamberlain was taken to Deschutes County jail on charges that include theft, identity theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, possession of heroin and unlawful entry of a vehicle.

Chamberlain has been convicted of more than a dozen misdemeanors and felonies in Deschutes County since 2010, according to information contained in Oregon’s criminal database.
