Bend police and Deschutes County Search and Rescue Monday afternoon discovered the body of a 60-year-old former Bend firefighter who was last seen early Wednesday morning.

Authorities had earlier enlisted help from the public in finding John Love, who was dropped off by a cab driver at his home on St. Cloud Court between 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to Bend police.

About 2 p.m. Monday, 27 searchers and sheriff’s office personnel deployed to help Bend police with the search. After several hours, teams with dogs searched the area of Cooley Road and NE 18th Street and discovered Love’s body, mostly covered with snow, in a large hole in an area that was under construction, according to a release from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

The Bend Police Department is working with the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office and state medical examiner to determine cause of death.

Love was hired by the Bend Fire Department in 1996 as a firefighter, according to the department. He was promoted to fire engineer in 2002 and retired in 2013, but was rehired as volunteer coordinator in 2014. He retired again in 2016.
