Rep. Cheri Helt, R-Bend, said late Friday that she will resign from the Bend-La Pine School Board, citing time demands of the Legislature.
In a letter to Board Chair Andy High and Superintendent Shay Mikalson, Helt said she will work with them on a “resignation date that allows for a smooth transition.”
Helt, who represents Zone 1, has served eight years on the board. She was elected to the House District 54 seat in November and was sworn in Monday. Helt said Monday that she planned to be in Salem “five days a week” during the session, which starts Tuesday and runs through the end of June.
In her letter, Helt said she was making the decision “with honor and sadness.”
“My new responsibilities as State Representative for the people of Bend will not allow me the time to continue serving on the school board, and the students, teachers, parents and voters of the school district deserve a full-time voice,” Helt wrote.
Helt has been appointed vice-chair of the House Education Committee, and a member of the Joint Student Success Committee.
“Rest assured, while my elected role has changed, my fierce advocacy for our schools and children will continue,” Helt wrote.
Helt thanked board members and district staff.
“Schools are more than classrooms and buildings, they are they are the fabric of the community,” Helt wrote. “I am grateful for the education my kids have received because of the dedication of so many.”
