A 49-year-old Bend woman has been charged with murdering a woman Wednesday north of Bend.
Joanna Lynn Kasner on Thursday afternoon remained a patient at St. Charles Bend, where she’s in law enforcement custody in a “secure area,” according to Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel.
She’s accused of one count of murder for allegedly killing Valerie A. Peterson, 58.
“The details of why she is at St. Charles I cannot tell the public under Oregon law,” Hummel said.
About 11 a.m. Wednesday, police were called to a report of gunfire at McGrath Road and Casa Court several miles north of Bend off U.S. Highway 97. Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find Peterson alive, but their life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
Hummel said he cannot provide more information, including how Peterson and Kasner knew each other. “We are learning more every hour,” he said. “And I don’t want to taint the investigation by putting out information to the public.”
Kasner’s husband filed for divorce last month citing irreconcilable differences, court records show. The couple were married only five months earlier. It was her second marriage.
Kasner is listed as an owner of property near the shooting scene, according to Deschutes County Assessor’s records.
In recent Facebook posts, Kasner criticizes local police.
“I’m so fed up with crooked cops,” she wrote Jan. 13.
In a post Jan. 12, Kasner said she recently relocated to Oregon from Snohomish County, Washington, due to harassment at the hands of law enforcement. “However that trouble has followed me to Oregon,” Kasner said. “I am being harassed and threated (sic) and poisend (sic) by I believe the same people.”
Kasner’s is the sixth pending homicide case in Deschutes County.
