Doctors from Bend Urology Associates in Bend and Redmond have joined Summit Medical Group Oregon-Bend Memorial Clinic, the region’s largest multispecialty clinic announced this week.

The four urologists and two physician assistants will remain in their existing buildings in Bend and Redmond, and will retain their support staff.

Summit-BMC officials said the clinic had undergone a review of their specialties last year to identify what services they might want to add.

“One identified gap was providing urologic care to our patients,” said. Dr. Russell Massine, chief governance officer of Summit-BMC. “So we immediately reached out to our colleagues at Bend urology about the feasibility of an integration.”

Massine said the merger allows the clinic to expand services for their patients while providing the urologists some relief from the administrative burdens of running a practice.

“From a urology standpoint, we work so closely with primary care doctors and other specialties,” said Dr. Meredith Baker, one of the urologists making the move. “This really allows us to improve communication between our physicians and to really deliver a higher level of care, and hopefully facilitate easier connections between patients and their physicians.”

Urology services have been in a high demand in Central Oregon, and the clinic plans to add a physician trained in urologic oncology next month.

Clinic officials said urology patients should not notice a change. Both clinics have been members of the Central Oregon Independent Practice Association, which negotiates contracts with insurance plans.

“A large majority if not all of the contracts are the same,” said Justin Sivill, executive director and regional chief operating officer for Summit Health Management. “For the most part, no one should notice much of any difference.”

Bend Urology is one of two urology practices in Central Oregon. Urology Specialists of Oregon, which is affiliated with High Lakes Health Care and other specialty clinics in Bend, has three urologist and two physician assistants on staff.
