Police say a man who was found dead in his La Pine driveway Monday morning likely froze to death after slipping on ice while getting out of his vehicle.

Larry A. Campbell, 66, was discovered around 11:45 a.m. in the 17600 block of Penny Court, a dead-end street in the Newberry Estates subdivision. When deputies with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office arrived, Campbell was cold to the touch and “beyond medical help,” according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office said evidence showed Campbell had slipped on the ice and fell upon exiting his vehicle Sunday evening. He was unable to get to his feet and began crawling toward an area of the driveway with less ice, according to the sheriff’s office, but was not able to get up and likely died of cold exposure.

The overnight low temperature in La Pine was 21 degrees.
