Oregon State Police captain and former spokesman William Fugate resigned Thursday, two days after pleading guilty to violently grabbing his estranged wife in 2017.
Fugate, who had been on paid and then unpaid administrative leave with the state police, also plans to surrender his police certification through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
Eriks Gabliks, director of the Oregon DPSST, said state police officials contacted the agency Thursday to say Fugate had resigned. Fugate also contacted the agency to say he intended to surrender his certification.
Gabliks said the agency opened a case against Fugate once he was criminally convicted Tuesday and was in the process of deciding to suspend or revoke his certification.
“We opened up a case and we would have been looking at his conduct, especially his actions of domestic violence,” Gabliks said.
The agency now considers Fugate’s certification revoked, and his name will be added to a national database of decertified officers. Fugate’s name will be flagged in the database if he seeks police work outside Oregon, Gabliks said.
Fugate, 43, was sentenced Tuesday to two days in jail and two years probation after pleading guilty to one count of harassment.
The harassment charge stems from an incident on June 15, 2017. Fugate was in a verbal argument with his estranged wife, Georgina Monrean-Fugate, in the couple’s Redmond home. Fugate violently grabbed his estranged wife’s arm to get her attention. The act caused bruises to her arm, according to prosecutors.
A separate harassment charge against Fugate was dropped as part of his plea agreement.
Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel said investigators uncovered seven total instances of domestic violence, five of which were barred from prosecution because of Oregon’s statute of limitations.
Fugate joined the state police 11 years ago after working for the Vancouver Police Department in Washington. When he was initially placed on paid leave in February, he was earning between $9,900 and $10,900 per month.
