A scenic flight over Central Oregon on Saturday ended badly when the pilot of a Cessna 180 lost control of his plane as he landed at Bend Municipal Airport, authorities said.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 2:27 p.m., Bend Police Sgt. Robert Jones said.

The pilot, a Bend resident, had taken three passengers, including a juvenile, for a scenic flight that started at the Bend airport, Jones said. Area winds were gusting as the pilot touched down.

“As soon as he hit, a gust of wind started to turn the plane sideways,” Jones said. “He tried to power back up, and I guess he lost control and was blown off the runway.”

The juvenile was taken to St. Charles Bend with minor injuries. Everyone else was unhurt, Jones said.

“Other than that, everyone walked away from the crash,” Jones said. “It was a miracle everyone was OK.”
