Bulletin Staff Report

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is accepting adoption applications until Oct. 19 for the more than 60 horses seized from a Terrebonne ranch in March.

The sheriff’s office will have a lottery to determine the selection order of prospective adopters due to a high interest in the horses.

To download a livestock adoption application, which is due back by 5 p.m. on Oct. 19, visit sheriff.deschutes.org/community/animal-control/animals-for-adoption.

Completed adoption applications can be submitted via email to mariya.leufven@deschutes.org, or faxed to 541-389-1928. Completed applications can also be dropped off during business hours at the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, 63333 Highway 20 West, Bend, or to the La Pine and Sisters substations.

During the week of Oct. 22 to Oct. 26, the sheriff’s office will do background checks on applicants. The lottery draw will happen on Oct. 26 to determine the order in which prospective adopters will select an available horse.

The horses will be available for pick-up between Oct. 29 and Nov. 2. The sheriff’s office will not hold horses for adopters past Nov. 2. If an adopter is not able to pick up the horse by Nov. 2, the horse will again become available for adoption.

Pre-adotpion veterinary checks at the adopter’s expense are welcome, and all out of state adopters will be required to obtain a Coggins test for a blood infection prior to transport.

Those who do not participate in the random drawing will have an opportunity to adopt any remaining horses after November 2.
