Tall ships to dock — Two tall ships plan to visit Astoria and Coos Bay this summer after they were unable to find moorage at the Port of Newport. Port commissioners in Newport revoked a permit for the Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain to use a dock in late July. Bayfront merchants and fishermen sought the action because they were concerned about the extra crowds and potential parking nightmare that come with a visit from the tall ships. The ships will be at the dock in Coos Bay from July 12 to July 25. They will arrive in Astoria July 26. Sailing and dockside tours will begin the next day.

Fatal fire charges — Authorities have arrested two boys in connection with a Wednesday fire that killed a 79-year-old man in western Oregon. The 14-year-old grandson of the man who died in the fire and the boy’s 15-year-old friend were arrested and booked into a juvenile facility. The grandson was charged with murder, arson and aggravated theft. His friend was charged with attempted arson and aggravated theft. Authorities responded to a house fire in rural Willamina early Wednesday and inside found the body of a man believed to be Dieter Aulig. A woman who lived there suffered burns and was treated at a hospital.
