A former Baker County fire chief is being accused of buying a self-contained breathing apparatus compressor from the Bend Fire Department in August at a $4,000 discount for his department, but instead bought it for personal use.
Daniel Weitz was indicted Thursday by a Deschutes County Grand Jury on charges of first-degree official misconduct and theft by deception. He was the Baker Rural Fire Protection District fire chief at the time of the alleged theft and misconduct.
Weitz, 60, allegedly told the Bend Fire Department he was buying the compressor for the Baker County fire district so it was sold at a discount, according to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office.
Weitz is schedule for an arraignment on the indictment in January.
